GM Dex Coolant necessary?

I understand that the orange dex coolant is designed for GM vehicles, but I had a reputable mechanic tell me that I could use Prestone coolant instead. He and plenty of sites online mentioned that the dex coolant is poorly designed and causes parts to corrode in the vehicles. Yet, there are plenty of people on here(yahoo answers) that seem to be strong advocates of dex cool.

What are your opinions or knowledge on the pesky orange Dex Coolant?|||The Dex-Cool antifreeze is not bad..................the problem is that you need to flush and refill it every two years or 24,000 miles.

That is what we do at our shop for our customers and we don't have any issues with the Dex-Cool.

If you leave it in for their recommended 100,000 to 150,000 miles then get ready to have a lot of problems but that works the same with any type of antifreeze.

I always believe that you should keep what the manufacture puts in the vehicle and don't substitute other products.
